How old do I look?

DH got back from New York the other day with a story about a homeless guy who’d tried to get some money from him by guessing his age.

I won’t say what age he thought DH was, but it was six years older than he actually is.

Just the beginning of a pilot’s mid-life crisis

“Well that’s ridiculous,” I replied, because it was – and because the last thing I want is for DH to have a mid-life crisis. He already flies the most enormous jet airplane in the world; goodness knows where a mid-life crisis would lead.

At bedtime, I asked BB how old he thought I was.

“Erm,” said BB thoughtfully, giving it some serious consideration while brushing his teeth.

“Twenty-nine?”

Really?” I practically yelped, my voice a little too high-pitched.

I came clean. BB has no idea about age, after all.

“Well, I’m not. I’m forty sweetheart.”

“FOR-TY?” responded BB, his brown eyes widening into saucers.

“You mean a four AND a zero? … Oh Mummy!

Almost incomprehensible when you’re the tender age of seven!

  1. That’s so funny!
When I got to 40, Rosie helpfully said, “Mummy, that’s really REALLY old isn’t it?”
Mmm, yes, compared to four, it’s ten times older, which is quite a lot I suppose!

  2. My neighbour just celebrated her 60th birthday. She looks like someone in her late 40s and no age showing wrinkles as far I can see. Just think of the little kids with terminal illness, we’d be glad we have lived this long.

    • Exactly Karen. I had a close relative who died at 42, and was poorly from about 40 onwards – I think of her often and realise that I’m lucky to be entering ‘mid-life’. I wonder what your neighbour’s secret is? xx

  3. ‘Oh Mummy’ it sounds as if said in sympathy…! Very funny though. We catch our kids out all the time. For example when they’re telling stories about a teacher or another ‘old’ adult and we say (mishceviously) ‘so how old was he?’ and they reply ‘oh, 40ish?’ Except with their dad turning 50 this year the older one’s now know to say ‘oh quite old, well over forties.’

    • I remember my mum’s 40th birthday really well! And I also remember thinking it was quite old, lol! Now I know better – fabulous 40s and all that 🙂 I hope your DH has a wonderful big birthday this year! Looking forward to reading about it.
